A planed and grooved, fully solid wood flooring material that is at least 14 mm thick, maximum 80 mm wide and 200-1200 mm long is called strip parquet. The most common widths of the strips are 50 mm, 60 mm, 68 mm, 70 mm and 80 mm. There are also wider similar products, but they are classified as solid planks according to the standard (although, especially when made in a herringbone pattern, they are often still referred to as strip parquet). The most optimal lengths are multiples of the widths, i.e. 68 x 408 mm, in which case a checkered pattern can also be achieved with 6 adjacent parquet strips.
Strip parquet is most often made of oak, but all the most common parquet wood species, such as ash, birch, maple, red oak, walnut and cherry, are also available as strip parquet.
Strip parquet is available in two hand positions, which makes it possible to make different patterns. Usually, the package contains half left-handed and half right-handed strips. The most common installation pattern is probably herringbone, but checkered and brick laying are also used.
Strip parquet is installed by gluing and nailing to a plywood base. After fixing, the parquet is sanded smooth and surface-treated as desired with oil or varnish. Due to its thickness, the strip parquet can be sanded and re-surfaced numerous times. If used carefully, it is a lifelong flooring choice.
