Instructions and video for treating parquet floors with Berger-Seidle Classic BaseOil

Product description

This page contains general instructions for oiling a parquet floor with Classic BaseOil. The instructions included with the package should always be followed. If in doubt, always ask for advice before starting work. There is no rush when oiling the floor, as the oil does not normally dry too quickly. You can apply it at a leisurely pace and carefully until the end. The amount of oil applied is also not important, as long as you apply enough oil, i.e. so that the wood cannot absorb more. On the other hand, too much oil is of no use and increases the workload when removing excess oil, but it also does not cause any damage to the floor.
Before starting work:
• The surface must be sanded properly; oil does not cover sanding errors. After sanding, we recommend waterpopping the wood to enhance oil absorption and color. After moistening, let the floor dry before oiling (recommended overnight). The moisture content of the wood must not exceed 12%.
• The floor must be dry and free of any old coatings, oil, grease, wax, silicone, sanding dust and other dirt. Room temperature +15°C – 25°C, relative humidity 40–65%, material temperature +18°C – 25°C. Ventilate the work area sufficiently.
• Mix with a paint mixer all the way to the bottom and shake the container thoroughly. The color will settle to the bottom during long-term storage. Mix all the oils you need for the floor in one container.
• Follow general and possible product-specific occupational health and safety regulations.
• Ensure compatibility of the products used
Tools
Berger-Seidlen Classic BaseOil is applied with a steel trowel with rounded edges. After application, the surface is evened out and excess oil is removed with a single disc machine using, for example, a beige pad and, if necessary, a white pad for finishing. With colored products, the pad you choose will slightly affect the amount of oil left on the floor and thus the final shade. Dispose of used pads, towels and other textiles soaked in oil safely, risk of spontaneous combustion!
Application times and consumption
Applying times are usually 1-3 times, applying as much oil as the wood absorbs within about half an hour. The applications are done one after the other, with the second application starting 20-30 minutes after the first application. On slightly larger floors, the second application starts immediately after the first one is finished.
Consumption depends on the type of wood and the smoothness of the surface, e.g. with oak, experience has shown that typically 50 ml/m2 is a good estimate of the total consumption. There should be plenty of oil at the beginning of the job rather than just enough, as the job must be completed in one go with enough oil.
Drying time
• The oil hardens by oxidation, so good ventilation is essential
• Normally dry to walk on after 24 hours
• Can be varnished over when used with Classic Plus hardener when completely dry (test with a towel: when the color does not come off, it is dry, at least 24 hours).
• Full use and protection after 5 days
The drying times given may vary depending on air humidity, ventilation and temperature.
